The most recent Smurfs graphic novel to come out of Belgium is
titled Schtroumpf le Héros, which translates
to Smurf Heros. Okay, this book is entirely in French. We are several years
away from an English edition, so right out the door, I will say that this
graphic novel is great for someone who wants to brush up on their rusty French
and/or Smurf speak.
As most
Smurf stories start out, it’s a peaceful day in Smurf Village. While doing some
cleaning, the Smurfs find an old book in an attic that tells the story of a
Smurf who traveled to Mount Dragon and bathed in the red waters that flowed
from it. The waters gave the Smurf super hero like qualities – no fear, no
pain, no weaknesses. Three Smurfs, who were the laughing stock of the village,
are inspired by the story and sneak off to find the legendary waters so they
can become heroes in their own rights. Thus sets up an adventure where the
Smurfs might just get to prove what they are really smurfed of.
This
graphic novel captures the Smurfs at their true, blue best. The Smurfs are best
when they are on a full out adventure. Through the legend of the Hero Smurf,
the Smurfs learn a valuable lesson that can be passed on to readers of all
ages. Schtroumpf le Héros is not strictly for Smurf fans. I would recommend this story to anyone interested in adventure stories, the classic styling of Belgian comics, or simply just fun.
